Martin Rosol

In his most recent series entitled 'Psychorealm,' Martin Rosol evokes the inner planetary world of the oceans on the one hand and the extra planetary world of the cosmos on the other. Both realms have a deep psychological connection to the subconscious mind. Both have been inaccessible to us until recent times and so have a long history of myth, terror and wonder associated with them.

For eons, our only connection to these realms has been through the reflection of light. The stars in the sky and the shallow visible world of the sea sparked the imagination for countless generations. For the ancients, the sky and sea were filled with strange and sometimes terrifying creatures but they were also home to the gods. The imaginings of our ancestors tell us more of the inner realm of the mind than they do of the stark reality of those worlds.

These studies in glass also reflect light in a way that recalls our deep and abiding fascination with those worlds. With simple geometric forms and thin veneers of color the light is manipulated into the eye of the beholder. Perception transforms the light into recollections of the mystical world of our collective memory. They take us back to a time when the universe was still a daily experience of unified consciousness; before the world of technology shattered our myths and memories. The work speaks to our inner recollections of time past but also, through the present experience, to our hopes for the future.

Czech born Martin Rosol came to the United States in 1986 to pursue his career as a sculptor. Rosol is a graduate of the School for Art & Crafts in Prague, Czech Republic and a recipient of the Bavarian State Prize for Glass Sculpture. His work is represented in the collection of the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, NY, and the American Craft Museum, New York, NY, as well as other museums in the USA, Europe and Japan.
