Heller Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new works by Beth Lipman titled What Remains.
The exhibition will be on view from September 7 through October 6, 2007.
Beth Lipman creates work, which is a commentary on the history of depicting and presenting symbols of opulence and wealth as works of art. It takes the form of a still-life; both as object (clear glass & mixed media installations) and image of object (photographs). It is based on the historical development of the still life iconology narrative and the still-life's art-historical critique as rampant and banal, including its reinterpretation in the artist's own earlier work.
This exhibition will focus on Lipman's most recent series of photographs and her second large scale 'laid table' installation entitled Still Life with Metal Pitcher. Following her much-exhibited Bancketje installation, which has just been acquired by the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, this pivotal new work advances the 'laid table' idea with a composition in the round. Still Life with Metal Pitcher will be included in the exhibition Shattering Glass: A New Perspective at the Katonah Museum of Art, scheduled to open later this fall. Several new pieces from the 'Topiary' series and others will also be exhibited to show the full breadth of her work.
Lipman's photographs are images of her objects. In creating them she furthers her internal dialogue between the art-historical discussion of the still-life genre and the multitude of contemporary art issues with which it resonates (feminism, consumerism, power, wealth & poverty) while at the same time returning her work to the two-dimensional sphere where the still-life originated. In substituting image of object for object, she formally and conceptually poses a myriad of questions about the interconnectedness of possession, power and desire.
Beth Lipman studied at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and holds a B.F.A. from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, PA. Her work has been reviewed by ArtNews, The New York Times, Glass Magazine and American Craft Magazine. In 2001 Lipman was awarded a Professional Advancement Grant by the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts and she was the recipient of the 2006 Young Talent Award from UrbanGlass. She has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States and Canada. Her work is included in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Brooklyn, NY; the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC; the Speed Museum, Louisville, KY and the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, NY; as well as private collections nationwide.
The artist will be present at the opening reception on Thursday, September 6, 2007 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. To receive images for reproduction or to schedule an interview with the artist, please contact Katya Heller or Bob Roberts at 212-414-4014 during gallery hours, Tuesday – Saturday 11:00 am – 6:00 pm.
