About
Since 1986 the Heller Gallery has had the privilege of representing the exquisite turned wood forms of the Moulthrop family. Even though Ed, the family patriarch, passed away in 2003 the family tradition continues. In the words of former President Jimmy Carter, a friend and fellow woodworker "the artistry of Ed Moulthrop has been inherited — and perhaps enhanced — by that of his son Philip and his grandson Matt."
For three generations the Moulthrop family has cultivated a tradition of working in simple shapes, with local varieties of wood to reveal the natural beauty of the wood grain. Each piece is a transformation of a rough section of tree into a vibrant form. The wood contains unknown opportunities and patterns that are only revealed as it is turned. Experience has taught the Moulthrops’ to read the wood and see the potential in different local species such as ashleaf maple, loblolly pine, red maple, and wild cherry. Their bowls represent a marriage between nature and the man made, with mindfulness to reveal the natural beauty that is already within.
We are proud to present the latest collection of Philip and Matt Moultrop’s vessels, continuing a galley tradition of representing outstanding work by a family which can be considered a national treasure.
